For this project we were given the task of solving a world problem using biotechnology. My group went through many different world problems before deciding to solve the problem of ocean acidity. Rising pollution levels have caused the oceans to become more acidic due to the fact that the harmful gases in the atmosphere dissolve into the ocean. Our solution was to introduce a bacteria into the ocean that would process the dissolved CO2, making the ocean have a more basic pH level.
Presentation
Key Terms
Acidification: Ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earth's oceans, caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Ocean: Large body of slat concentrated water, covers 71% of globe.
Greenhouses Gasses: Gaseous compound in the atmosphere that is capable of absorbing infrared radiation, thereby trapping and holding heat in the atmosphere.
CO2: Carbon Dioxide, dissolves into ocean and lowers pH.
pH: Numeric scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution.
Halophiles: Organisms that thrive in high salt concentrations
Bioremediation: Waste management technique that involves the use of organisms to neutralize pollutants from a contaminated site.

Reflection
This project was a great way to end the school year. I enjoyed getting to choose a topic that we as a group felt was important to the world. At the beginning of the project we weren't as productive as we should have been, but then we became very focused and worked hard for every minute that we could work. We should have spent more time practicing our presentation to make its delivery more smooth and effective. In the end we had a very well thought out presentation with clear details to explain our solution to potential buyers.
