Project
For this unit we did two mini projects. The first one was on Central Dogma and the second was on Homeostasis. For the Central Dogma project our job was to research a protein and describe the steps it took to go from a DNA sequence to protein. In our presentation we also hd to include a 3D model of our protein. The protein that we researched was hemoglobin, which is a protein molecule in red blood cells.
For the Homeostasis project we had the task to create and execute an experiment to show how the human body maintains Homeostasis. Homeostasis is the bodies ability to keep all of its contents in balance. We decided to see how our heart rate changes during physical activity to maintain Homeostasis. To demonstrate this, we had one of our group members go for a mountain bike ride while wearing a heart rate monitor to track his heart rate along the ride.

Concepts for Central Dogma Project
Central Dogma- It describes the flow of genetic info of the cells from DNA, to mRNA, to a protein.
DNA- Contains genetic information. It is also a self-replicating and shows up in almost all living organisms as the main component of chromosomes.
RNA-Its present in all living cells. It acts as a messenger carrying instructions from DNA for controlling protein synthesis.
Protein- organic compounds that are an essential part of all living organisms. They are composed of one or more long chains of amino acids.
Transcription- DNA unzips and RNA polymerase adds an mrna strand from base pairing.
Translation- RNA codes for a codon to match with the anticodon of the trna.
Protein synthesis-The process in which a fully functional protein is made.

Concepts for Homeostasis Project
Homeostasis- A set of processes that help the body maintain a stable environment
Heartbeat-the contraction of the heart
Cardiovascular system- the system that circulates blood and lymph through the body

Reflection
The Central Dogma project wasn't very fun. The research was very time consuming and boring. I like more hands on projects, and this was definatly not one of them. Our group stayed on task very well and got all of the work done on time. I didn't contribute much to the project because it was the complete opposite style of the type of project that I usually enjoy.
The homeostasis project was one that liked quite a bit. I enjoy mountain biking, so it was the perfect topic to use. Our group worked very hard and everybody contributed equally to the project. This project went very well and I can't wait for the next one.
